What are the best island-hopping routes in Rijeka?
If you want to enjoy island hopping in northern Croatia, head for the gateway city of Rijeka. Located between the Istria Peninsula and the mainland, Rijeka is the perfect starting point for your sailing boat vacation.
Why not make your first port of call Rab Island? This historical island has plenty of things to do and see. Spend some time exploring Rab Town with its four church towers and ancient walls. After sightseeing, relax on Paradise Beach and try the delicious local cuisine.
Next, set sail for Cres Island. This island has the most stunning natural scenery, remote hilltop villages, and secret coves, hidden from view. Visit Cres Town with its beautiful churches, quaint houses, and the town's bustling main square.
From Cres Island sail up the canal, some six and a half miles to Losnij Island. This is maybe one of the smaller islands but it has a lovely harbour to stop at. Have a walk among the local fishing villages and the peaceful pine forest. Enjoy the different watersports such as:
sailing
kayaking
windsurfing
For a quieter, more laid-back feel, set course for Ilojvik, Unije, and Susak. Each island has its own unique atmosphere and beaches. There are both sandy and pebble beaches for everyone to enjoy.
What are the best beaches to visit in Rijeka?
You don't have to stray far from the port in Rijeka to discover beautiful beaches, many of which have been awarded the coveted Blue Flag for the purity of their water. Ideal for family fun is Fiumana Beach just north of the city centre. The double bay of this pebbled beach provides plenty of room even on a sunny summer's day. Also central to the town is Kantrida Beach, ideal if you fancy a spot of paddleboarding. Within walking distance of the port but much more secluded is Uvala Svezanj Bay, which makes up part of a nature reserve. Its clear turquoise waters are perfect for snorkelling. To really get away from it all head to Glavanova Beach: with its backdrop of tree-covered rocks and unusual coloured waters, it's a romantic spot that's fed by underground springs which keep the water here clean and cool. Combine a short hike with your day at the beach by visiting Sablićevo Beach. Spring waters also feed this stretch of the coastline and help create the beautiful blue-green sea. Slightly further away is Kostrena Beach, where it's easy to while away several enjoyable hours here by sunbathing, snorkelling, and strolling along the waterfront promenade. When it's time for lunch, enjoy locally caught seafood in the beach bars.
