Spring is near and that can only mean one thing: the sailing season has officially begun. If you’re feeling the wanderlust and planning your next sailing holiday, you might be asking yourself whether it’s worth buying your own boat. We’ve put together the top reasons why renting a boat is so much better than buying one – so that this summer will be the best of your life. You’ll definitely find the right boat for you at an affordable price.

So, what are the 3 main reasons why renting a boat is so much better than buying one?

  1. No big investment needed
  2. Have fewer costs
  3. Be more flexible

1. You don’t have to make a big investment

Buying a boat is a huge investment. Unlike real estate property, the value of a boat doesn’t just fluctuate – it definitely decreases over time. Your boat will depreciate by at least 20% in the very first year, and by a steady 5-10% in the following years. This is also assuming that boat prices – and the economy – will stay completely steady.

There won’t be any investment costs when renting a boat – only the rental fee and a refundable deposit. If you’re traveling with several people you can even split the cost and your amazing sailing holiday will probably end up being cheaper than a regular vacation in a hotel abroad.

When renting a boat you will neither have to commit financially nor commit to only one boat. If you’re new to sailing you will want to try different types of boats, makes and sizes – that’s not possible once you’ve decided on a buying a specific one. As an experienced sailor you already know all of the amazing, different types of boats that are available on the market and that it’s basically impossible to commit to only one of them for the rest of your life. Renting a different boat each year means that you can go on different kinds of adventures and explore the world on water on different

2. You will have fewer costs

Buying a boat is expensive, and that doesn’t even include the maintenance and other running expenses involved in owning a boat. Mooring, insurance and fuel, as well as constant maintenance, repairs and winterising your boat are only a few of the costly expenses you’ll have to reckon with. Remember that if your boat is a bit older or pre-owned these costs will increase significantly over time. Additionally, boat repairs are highly technical and will have to be done by experts, which is another cost factor.

If you’re traveling abroad you will have to pay for flights and accommodation – on a yacht you are already traveling in your own hotel room. If you book a fully catered yacht holiday the costs for catering, insurance and any other expenses will be paid by the person renting the boat. All you have to worry about is achieving maximum relaxation.

3. You will be so much more flexible when renting a boat

If you’re not able to trailer your boat, you will always be bound to your immediate sailing area. Should you be able to transport your boat, routes to different sailing areas might be long and tedious. A lot of free time is necessary in order to properly enjoy traveling by your own boat.

If you rent a yacht, however, you are free to travel the entire world – not just the waters where your boat is located. Do you want to sail in Croatia, Turkey or Greece? No problem, Borrow A Boat offers almost 50.000 boats in over 500 different locations in over 30 countries across the world. If you rent a boat you have the freedom of choice: try new boat types and book the exact number of cabins that fit your traveling needs. Maybe you want to spend a romantic weekend on a luxury yacht in spring, have an amazing family holiday on a sailboat in summer or go partying with your friends on a catamaran in autumn. If you decide to rent a boat you could have all of these experiences – and so many more – in the very same year.

  1. I really like the reasoning you bring up here. Being able to try out different types of boats for less of a cost is something that I can’t really argue with. Taking the experience away and just looking at the expense it may make even more sense. Buying something is expensive, especially if you’re not going to be using it a ton. Thanks for the awesome tips!
