If you’ve wondered whether it’s possible to travel with your pet on board, the answer is a resounding YES. There are some charters and specific boats that won’t allow it, but in most cases the answer is yes. (And at Zizoo, we can send you a personalized offer of boats that do allow pets on board.)

Here are just a few points to keep in mind when booking your travel with your pet:†

Check pet travel regulations at your departure and destination location

Most countries require your pet to have a microchip, vaccinations, a health certificate, and/or a pet passport signed by an officially approved veterinarian. You can check any specific country’s regulations at Bring Fido, but make sure to cross-verify all info on a government site or with a government official.

Keep the first day short

Trial a 2-3 hour ride on the first day, testing your pet’s capacity for seasickness, extended time under the sun, and a new bathroom routine.

Bring all your pet’s favorite foods and dog supplies

One thing you won’t be able to easily stock up on when you’re traveling is pet supplies. So, make sure to bring lots of back-up toys and extra food rations.

If your pet has long hair, visit a groomer before your trip

Prevent sun sickness by getting your pet’s hair trimmed before traveling.

Take every opportunity to let your pet be active.

No matter how calm your pet, you should take every opportunity to let your pet play in the marinas or on the beach. They’ll appreciate the opportunity to run around unrestricted, and will tire themselves out for the next leg of your trip.

Consider getting a harness

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Unlike a standard collar, a harness provides a buckle you can use to fetch your pet out of the water without choking them. Get one on Amazon
