How to Pack for the Yacht Week

Packing for a summer holiday can sometimes be a stressful task.

We either under-pack or, what’s more likely, over-pack, which can often be much worse. Especially when you’re packing for a sailing holiday.

    Know what I mean? No?

    Well, let me explain.

Let’s say you’ve convinced half a dozen friends to join you for an incredible week-long yacht week sailing holiday in one of those tropical destinations we all dream of. You’re headed for pristine water, gorgeous beaches, lovely coastal towns and island paradises; regardless of whether you’ve decided to sail Croatia, Turkey, Spain, the Greek Islands, or one of the countless other top sailing destinations in the world, this really is going to be the trip of a lifetime.

But first, there are a few things you need to consider.

Packing for a summer sailing holiday is a little different than packing for a regular holiday. You’ll need a little less clothing, but clothing of certain types, and you’ll need to pack strategically.

    But fear not, friends!

We’ve put together a guide to packing for a yacht week holiday, so that you’ll have everything you need – and nothing you won’t – for the perfect sailing holiday.

    The Perfect Travel Bag

Whatever you do, don’t even think about bringing a hard suitcase! You’ll be staying in some tiny quarters where space is seriously limited, so a soft duffel bag or backpack is ideal for fitting into tight quarters. Most cabins have small closets, so you can unpack your things, roll up your duffel bag and still have room in your cabin to breathe.

    The Clothing

    For the ladies:

    • 2-3 bikinis
    • 4-5 light dresses
    • 1 eveningwear outfit

    • 2 pairs of shorts
    • 1 pair of leggings

    • 1 pair of boat shoes
    • 1 pair of dress shoes
    • 1 hat

    The Toiletries

Our top tip is to travel with a hanging toiletries bag. These are ideal for sailing, where space in the bathroom is minimal.

    For the ladies:

    • Waterproof makeup

    • Soap or body wash (small bottles)
    • Cleansing wipes

    • Lip balm (with SPF)
    • Toothbrush and toothpaste
    • Deodorant
    • A wet brush and hair ties

    What Not to Bring

    • Heavy clothing – materials like denim and wool are no good
    • Jewelry – bring one or two statement pieces if you like, but any more isn’t necessary

    • A hard suitcase

    • A first aid kit
    • Bed linen and blankets
    • Navigation instruments and maps
    • Guidebooks
